Opportunity knocks

Last month I turned down probably one of the best opportunities I’ve been approached with as a blogger.

My preference word to cover blogging trips/product reviews/working with brands etc is ‘opportunity’. I can’t bear it, when people suggest bloggers get things for ‘free’. Nothing is free. I am an influencer, with an engaged audience. I use social media channels effectively and write fluently. A lot of my time and effort has gone into building all that.

Any review I do is thorough, researched and takes time to write and photograph. My aim is good content. All that does not equal “freebie”.

The whole issue of opportunities is a contentious. There are those that perceive that others unfairly get more or are grabby. There are those at the beginning of their blogging journeys who are desperate to work with brands and feel they can’t break in. Trust me, be patient (BritMums tips). The whole issue occasionally gives rise to petty and unprofessional moaning on social media.

I don’t do lots of reviews. I’m not high profile but I’ve had some amazing opportunities via blogging. I say ‘no’ to more than I say ‘yes’ to, because it doesn’t fit my blog or family (inappropriate approaches – whole other column). If appropriate I pass it on.

About once a year I get offered something utterly lovely. Recently, this came in the shape of 4 desserts and a really thoughtful bliss pack. I am now totally smitten by this particular yoghurt/dessert brand. Last year, I was sent some tea, biscuits and a magazine; perfect.

Last month I said no to a press trip with Catalan Tourist Board. Just typing that makes me want to chew the edge of the table. *chews the table anyway*. I adore Spain.

Those organising the press trip to Catalan were flexible and understanding. I wanted to make it work, I was very fortunate to be picked. I agonised and repeatedly weighed it up. Right there, right then. It just didn’t work for our family. Not for one reason, for many.

A lovely group of bloggers and their families went, time with them would have been a joy. Waking up to status updates from the trip made we want to bang my head against the wall (may have done that). A quick peek at Instagram and I was questioning my sanity. I’d failed as a mother and denied my child something wonderful.

I reminded myself of why I said no and ate a large slice of cake to compensate.

Blogging opportunities are unpredictable, they are like buses. Nothing for ages, then three at once. However I am a firm believer in making your own opportunities. Build a good blog and make a good pitch, that suits the brand and you.

While, we are on the subject I am not averse to doing things for no obvious return (and have done) if I think it might be a good experience or build a relationship. Having said that I will not host your content for free. Yes, you. You know who you are.

I am still left wondering if I have turned down the best thing I will ever be offered.
