Mums in Business Round-up : Setting goals for 2017

It only seems like 5 minutes ago I doodled a 10 Goals for 2016 sheet and used my brand new camera to take photos of the children filling there’s in and now we are talking about goal setting for 2017! Crazy how times flies. You’ll be pleased to know Charlie has completed 8 of his 10 goals and fingers crossed the other two he’s doing over Christmas. I can’t wait to see what he puts down for 2017. (Best make a new Goal List). 

Before you sit down and aimlessly write a list of goals for 2017 you need a plan. Firstly you need to consider why you want to set goals? Vicky Charles’ 5 reasons to set goals looks at how setting goals helps you to refocus your small business/blog and keep you on track. I mean surely if you don’t have a goal then how do you know where your are going or even if you got there! 

You need to make sure they are SMART.  Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-based. 

  • Specific : Make sure your target or goal is well defined.
  • Measurable : Sometimes you know something has been achieved – one of Charlie’s goals is to go on a plane and another to get a Blue Peter badge.  However some goals can be harder, so ensure there is a measurable metric. i.e. Grow my Instagram following is a bit wholly you might change this too double my Instagram following to 1600. Basically you need to know if the goal is obtainable and when it’s been achieved.
  • Achievable : Don’t make your goals too easy or too hard.
  • Realistic : So I’ve removed marry Lee Mead from mine as that’s clearly not going to happen and Daddy Moo might be a little put out! It’s great to have dreams but you don’t want to get to the end of thew year and feel deflated.  If we go back to my earlier example of growing your Instagram following a target like 1600 (which is double my current amount) is far more manageable (2 new followers everyday for 365 days) and realistic than say 10,000 which is a massive leap.
  • Time based : This is a little easier as you are giving yourself 2016 to complete them but you might want to consider breaking them down into a monthly goal so you aren’t over whelmed.

Amanda uses the example of using LinkedIn and how she wants to attract the right conference organisers and event companies. By having a content strategy for LinkedIn she’s more likely to hit this goal, rather than my random uploading of content when I remember.
