#SunSafeMetOffice chat: Understanding UV dangers for your family #ad

    19 June 2017 by BritMums

UV radiation is the major cause of sunburn, premature ageing (no!), eye damage and skin damage leading to skin cancer. Young children are at particular risk as increases in cancer can be related to UV exposure during childhood. In the UK, we are now experiencing high levels of UV, so now’s the time to get prepared and protect your family.

Join our #SunSafeMetOffice Twitter chat to learn about UV levels and the implications for you and your children’s delicate skin, and how you can check UV levels before leaving the house. The chat is sponsored by the Met Office, the UK’s National Weather Service, which is working with the NHS to save and protect lives from skin cancer.

Download the app (available on all app stores) to check UV levels in your area right now:

    Here are some surprising facts:

    • A fifth of parents are not aware that their children are most at risk from UV between May and September
    • 21% of parents wait until their children are starting to burn (visibly going pink) before they apply sun screen to them
    • 4 in 10 parents never check the UV forecast
    • Just 43% of parents would put sun screen on their children on a hot a cloudy day – despite them still being at risk from UV
    • Over a quarter of parents say their children have suffered from ‘painful’ sunburn in the past two years

We want to hear from you:

    • What steps do you take protecting your kids from UV rays?
    • Your strategy for sun care during sunny and overcast days?
    • Your questions about UV and sun protection

Don’t forget to visit Met Office URL for more tips, advice and Q&As.
