Bit of drizzle outside my window. Too much to do. Worried that my diet isn’t working but still heaping a sugar in my tea and having my second round of jam on toast.
Kids squabbling at breakfast about who gets to look at the back of the cereal box and the school run looms.
Sigh.
Yes a very ordinary day and a little grey.
Why was I feeling so gloomy?
“You get more of what you focus on.”
The thought floated in and settled in my mind.
My mum had always told me this. As I thought of this I thought of her; often smiling, always positive, so happy with ordinary day to day life.
I needed to change the direction of my focus.
I bit my toast a little slower enjoying my hot tea and the lovely strawberry jam as I focused on the taste and the moment.
Seconds after their spat I see my kids having a cuddle ..how quickly they make friends again not letting things fester for hours but really just whizzing through the bad times and moving on. They will always love each other I’m sure and long after I’m gone they will have one another as family.
Amidst the grey skies we saw a rainbow on the way to school. For once I insisted we just stopped and stared. We weren’t late. I had decided I need to look for the gold amongst the grey that day and just like that this rainbow full of colour and promises had appeared.
After school I had an appointment and had to take my son. He sat impatiently in the waiting room, seconds after I settled he came bursting in the background shouting where’s the exit? I wondered what on earth happened. Turns out he had made friends with a beetle he’d called Harry and wanted to set him free before anyone trod on him. 19 minutes later he was back. He had given his seat to two elderly ladies. My fabulous, caring, empathic, gentleman of a son.
The kids just wanted beans on toast for tea so really nice and easy for me. We chatted for a while, memories of my mum and the BEST bits of their day at school. Then they took themselves off to read before bed. How wonderful they love to read, space for me and relaxation for them. Reading is such a pleasure.
So a lovely day with my lovely children filled with memories of a lovely lady.
I do firmly believe you get more of what you focus on and that is what makes the ordinary extraordinary.
So what’s been the best thing about your day?

Perfect post Becky - we two really are one. Today my best bit was not going to work but playing hooky to see my 7yo being 'link man' in his class service. My heart was so full!
