It’s strange the way each month a theme seems to develop linking a large number of the funny posts suggested to me – without me needing to be all bossy and say well it’s October so I want stuff on conkers and Halloween. And no that’s not this month’s theme, because the themes really have a life of their own not necessarily linked with the season or what’s in the news.
This month I’ve had quite a few posts of a … well of a “sexual nature” which is not something I’ve had before unless you count aged matron’s knitted nipples which I don’t. I have to confess that I have found them very funny indeed and so… I’ve decided to keep them until next month’s roundup as a little pick me up as the Christmas party season approaches. I may drop some of the illustrations though – thanks for those ladies and gentlemen. I’d never seen one that colour before!
But getting back to the subject in hand – this month’s theme. It’s an obvious one – but not in fact as common as you might expect among the funniest posts I read– this month though it’s parenting! AKA trying to function, lead a normal life, or just get through the day with children (and with your dignity in tact!)
This is one of my favourites this month. In all the embarrassing parental situations I have found myself in I certainly never got close to this in a dance class. Hilarious post from Chronicles of Domestic Disaster and you really feel as if you are there!
This one from Diary of a Milkshake Mummy I chose as it happened to me kind of. The only difference was I did actually wear the nappy – though I was in hospital overnight with my child so no-one saw me apart from my very poorly son! Read this and share the pain!
Life with two toddlers is summed up in Sonny and Luca’s list of what has been learnt and what hasn’t this week. I always like to feel a personal connection as you know so I particularly liked the idea of learning not to talk to mannequins. Readers and followers may have noted my avatar – in fact the photo of Not a Notting Hill Mum is a mannequin. But I have still been complemented on my complexion and my glossy hair and asked what conditioner I use – online only. Lots of other stuff here though, it’s not just about dummies!
This post is not actually a laugh out loud but it’s a smile in sympathy and I think a post that deserves to be read to remind us – if we need reminding – how very tough being a parent can be sometimes. But how determination and resilience and humour will win out, as they do When Grandad came to tea. Thanks to Ruthless Shanks for spotting this post.
Another on family life from Sonya Cisco that maybe won’t make you fall over in hysterics but boy will you be sniggering in recognition and sympathy at this one .
And if anyone is not yet aware how very, very young children can be, and yet still able to film their parents naked … Yes you did read that correctly … I said Naked! Again it’s happened to me – but it’s really all about what the little darlings do with the footage – in our case nothing, directly… But imagine my embarrassment when showing friends some video of the villa we’d stayed in… when mummy and daddy walk into shot coming into the house from the pool. Yes, we sunbathe nude sometimes, it’s a private villa. But it’s not a patch on what happened to Northern Mum
Rachelradiostar is having to deal with other dangers of the current digital – gadgetal age, when you have a teenager to worry about. It’s the embarrassing kind of stuff that is waiting round the corner for those of us with younger kids
As is this – an age old scenario that our own parents may have gone through with us; and our grandparents with our parents; and … I’ll stop there. But here are the dangers of rescuing a son who’s slightly the worse for wear, from best dad I can be. You might want to throw on some old clothes first…
And finally – I’m a journalist , I couldn’t resist, sorry and I do love Trevor MacDonald. This from best laid plans brought tears to my eyes – of hysterical laughter rather than sympathy and I’m quite hard to please in the laughter stakes. But this really will cheer you up I promise and you might even want to follow the advice. I’ll let you know what happens if I do…
About
Not a Notting Hill Mum" is a journalist and writer, who has lived in Notting Hill for 15 years and blogs about ordinary life in W11 among the celebrities, supermodels and super-rich. She is slowly getting used to the fact that she is also a mother to Amelie and Alexander (now 8 and 5). So as well as writing about what's going on in the neighbourhood from cool - and affordable- places to visit, to how to find the Blue Door, NNHM also writes about the issues thrown up by modern family life and the funny things her children do and say.
