Good Reads: Internet dating, Twitter & letter to daughters

Surprise! It’s me again. Sorry for the radio silence. One has had a rather frenetic few weeks (personal and otherwise,) and I haven’t known where’s one’s arse is, let alone one’s elbow.

So … what’s new? Well, a lot of us met up at Cybher, which was great fun (my hotel room in Kings Cross that night is a blog post in itself,) and I know there are plenty of us looking forward to BritMums Live! which is nearly upon us. In equally important news, I just got my hair did for a cheeky little newspaper photoshoot, I lost my day job, I’m preparing for Dexter’s 8^th birthday party AND, at 41 years young, I find myself single again. See! A very busy few weeks.

But enough about me. (For now.) What have you all been up to? Here’s a selection of some posts I’ve managed to read whilst on the toilet. It’s my only free time these days.

First up is Jenny from Mummy Mishaps. How not to be a yummy mummy caught my eye because I’m totes not one. My bright lipstick is used only to detract from a multiple of other sins. Jenny’s include dribble, sick and snot. Which is nice. But we can all relate, right? Besides, yumminess is the eye of the beholder. So there.

Now to a lover of emoticons 😉 and gin in a tin. Up Yours Gina Ford is a breath of sweary fresh air. In, If you liked it then you should’ve put a ring on it, she talks about how Twitter rocked her world when Facebook was being a knob. I concur that robo-women are rubbish and real woman (yes, we swear – and WHAT?) are brilliant. And … well, just read it. Brilliant post.

Another great post about Twitter, this time from Dorky Mum. I bet we’ve all been asked what Twitter is like by non-Tweeting friends too and Dorky Mum explains it much better than I could. Crabby Tory bastards and Scottish folk music lovers all having one big party in a room in your house you didn’t know existed – suffice to say, a brief summation – but a must read.

And now … for something completely different. I LOVE this post from Waterbirth Please. In A post for daughters, we are reminded of some inspirational and amazing women that fought for independence, freedom, women’s rights and it’s a great message to our daughters (and to us,) that some things just aren’t worth worrying about.

Claire from Ministry of Mum has buggered off on holiday. Yeah, good luck with that! Holidaying with kids is not easy. That’s what Duty Free was invented for, right? Let’s all form a circle, hold hands and pray for her now.

Good to see another post from Emily at My Shitty Twenties – cos she’s brill. Now, I’ve internet dated and feel Emily’s pain in Hide & Seek. Being a single mum rarely seemed to be a plus when I was looking for a potential beau, and it’s a shame to see that, for the most part, that hasn’t changed. But, like Emily, I was always upfront about being a mum – it’s part of who I am. Good luck Emily, and if you find a decent one, ask if he has a hot, single brother. Cheers.

When I saw Amy from Bitchin Wives Club was writing about puppies, I was hoping for the other sort. I’m like that. In fact, she was writing about being scammed by the baby dog variety. Props to her for admitting her faux pas (admittedly, they were really cute!) and she really IS a smart and savvy woman, but it just goes to show, there are some real shits out there. You have been warned.

The law is an ass. As a newly single woman, I have just had to ask for financial help. I swear, some government tax person, somewhere, is have a proper laugh – at my expense. Ruth from This Lemonade Life pondered the same thing and highlights Dave Cameron’s wages versus ours and points out the discrepancy between what the law says you are entitled to live on… and what it feels like to actually have to live by them. It’s no joke.

A great idea from Kate at Kate on Thin Ice. We all love shopping. This is a true fact. Well, what if you could help charities at the same time? Win/Win! Check out her post and she’ll explain all.

And finally, it’s MoVo time. Fran and I are sistren. Not real sisters in the biblical sense, but we sure do have a lot in common. Firstly, we’re hilarious. Although it’s a tad annoying we’re in the same BiBs category. Secondly, we’re single mums and have recently realised that we must survive on eating dust as we’re so skint. Panic is another brilliant post and I know that sometimes her humour is used to try and disguise the fact that actually, she’s a little bit scared. I know, because I do it too. So everyone send her (and me,) a pound now and you can make sure our kids don’t have to eat dust for tea. K?
