Health Round-up: Drink awareness, PND and a better you

health round upThere is a definite chill in the air and I don’t know about you but along with my festive shopping, I am restocking the medicine cabinet too, so that I am ready for the coughs, colds and other bugs that usually take hold at this time of year.

There have been lots of interesting blog posts on the subject of health and fitness dotted between the festive posts and one topic that is particularly poignant at this time of year is alcohol awareness. Emma at emmaand3 has written two posts on the subject. In the first post, ‘Should mothers to be, be criminalised for drinking?’ Emma is concerned that plans to criminalise drinking during pregnancy is a drastic measure and thinks that educating mothers to be is the way forward.

In her second post, ‘When and how to start the conversation about alcohol’, she talks about her own experience as both a mum and a teacher when it comes to alcohol and suggests that rather than ignore the subject, it is better to start the conversation as early as possible so that you can make them aware of the dangers and teach them to have a sensible attitude towards drinking.

Joy at Pink Oddy is also discussing the subject of underage drinking and gives a very honest account of her own experiences and how that has given her a determination to educate her own children of the dangers. ‘Underage Drinking – Drinkaware’ is an interesting read for any parents of children heading for their early teens.

Sensory Processing Disorder is something that I knew very little about and over at the Sensory Seeker, Joy has written a post all about it. Based on her son’s diagnosis, this post tells you the signs of Sensory Processing Disorder, what exactly that means and some useful tips to help.

THESMILEGROUP website is a charity website which was set up by two mums who both suffered with Post Natal Depression and they felt that, there was a need for support on a local level. Now offering virtual support too, the website it well worth a visit as it is a great source of information on PND. In the post, ‘Beyond PND – the countdown to baby number two’, Natalie talks very honestly about the life-changing PND that she suffered after her first pregnancy and how she is facing the impending birth of child number two with a positive attitude.

It is easy to take the NHS for granted as we have never known life without it. Mary at Keynko has written a fantastic post which reminds us all how lucky we are to have the NHS in this country and how a little patience and understanding goes along way when the service is underfunded and medical staff are over-worked. In ‘From the Cradle to the Grave’, Mary tells us that she has seen how things can go wrong but having worked in the NHS she cautions us to appreciate it.

Another post from a mum who knows all about the NHS, Amy from 2boys1mum, is a nurse and mum and she understands all about the challenge parents face when giving antibiotics to young children. In her post ‘Top tips for giving antibiotics to a baby‘, she offers lots of tips both as a mum and a nurse to try to make the process less stressful and to be honest, some of the tips apply to giving medicine to older children too.

My final post this month is from Katy Hill. I love her post, ‘My Best Me!”  as it is a really positive and uplifting read. Rather than waiting for the new year to start hew new regime, she is doing it right now and there will be none of the usual ‘new me’ nonsense as she is happy with who she is, she simply wants to be the best version of herself. This post is the perfect read as we all head into the new year and there is lots of advice and inspiration to motivate you to finding the ‘best you’.
