A happy blog post about active children

DadblogukThis is a happy blog post. No, actually, it’s a very happy blog post about active children.

Why so happy? Well, it’s simple really. After the deluge of the past few months I am overjoyed to be getting outside with the kids.

I insist on spending as much time as possible outdoors with the little ones. I think it has something to do with my own childhood as I grew up deep in the countryside where I ran feral. It was all a bit Enid Blyton; I’d disappear off into the fields in the morning and return at lunchtime when I was hungry and again in the evenings for dinner.

Of course my kids don’t have this luxury. They have to tolerate life in suburbia, not to mention a father who keeps dragging them outside to “get some fresh air.”

As any parent with young children will know, the opportunities to do this have been few and far between during this horrendously wet winter. All of a sudden, however, things have changed. The flood waters from the end of our street have receded, the sun has come out and the days have got longer.

When I pick the eldest up from school she wants to scamper off to a nearby park. We’ve gone pretty much every day over the past week.

Every time we bump into some of her classmates, so she gets to spend time with them playing on swings and slides while I have to chase after her (now toddling) younger sister and make sure she doesn’t get into trouble. It’s also given me the chance to chat to some of the other parents and we all seem to be of the same mindset. In other words, we all think it’s great to let the kids off the leash for a bit at the end of the school day.

We’ve been getting home a good hour later than usual. The kids, however, have had exercise and are refreshed and I swear they’re in a better mood and going to bed happy and content.

Happy children equals happy daddy and mummy. Not just happy, but healthy too!

About John Adams

John Adams is a married with two young daughters. He has been a stay at home dad for almost four years. John started blogging back in 2012 after being invited to one-too-many "mother and toddler groups." This inspired him to write about the issues he faced as a stay at home dad and the gender barriers men face as parents. John continues to write about lie as a stay at home dad. He also writes about every aspect of parenting; schooling, education, pregnancy and birth, childcare and so on. Over time he has broadened the focus of his blog so he now writes about family finances, photography and occasionally covers men's style and fashion. John was originally a journalist. He concedes, however, that was a long time ago.

Athletic children? Perhaps I should make that my ambition!

It's just making such a huge, positive difference to family life. The only down side is how dirty the school uniform is getting but that's a small price to pay.

Loved this post. Am lucky to live in Cornwall & my 4 kids spend most of their free time outdoors. Like you say, I want them to have the same "Swallows & Amazons" childhood that I did!!

Couldnt agree more. Emigrating to warmer climes is often a topic of conversation and if it wasnt for High Command's folks we would!

You know what Tom, I always swore I could never leave the UK on a permanent basis. This past winter, however, has made me rethink this policy! I can't see it happening, but I would consider it in the right circumstances.
