BritMums Green Round-up: Use up month, rag rugs and the bin slimmer

Did you make any ‘green’ resolutions this year?

The 4^th Tuesday of the month is the Grand Green Roundup where I’ll be sharing 5 posts to whet your eco-friendly appetite.

For many people, having children suddenly changes your focus. You realise that long after you’re gone, your children need a beautiful and healthy planet to live on. You might lose sleep after reading hair raising stories about toxic chemicals in your toiletries or cleaning products. You might be concerned about the quality of food you are feeding your family. Or perhaps soaring food and fuel prices spur you on to try a bit of self-sufficiency.

The Green Roundup features blog posts to help you live the ‘Good life’ regardless of whether you’re a newbie or a pro. You’ll find links to established bloggers who live and breathe an eco friendly life, newbies who share their green adventures so we can learn with them and bloggy challenges and tutorials so you can roll up your sleeves and get stuck in.

USE UP MONTH!

Kicking off this month’s green roundup is Lisa from The Mummy Whisperer. She’s challenging us to have a ‘use up!’ month which combines two of my favourite activities – reducing waste and saving money! Have a rummage through the tins cupboard, drag out the UFOs (unidentified frozen objects) from the back of the freezer and while you’re at it use up the dregs in the shampoo and fabric conditioner bottles. You’ll save heaps of money and resources and might end up with some very interesting meals. Just don’t use shampoo instead of mayonnaise.

BAN THE LANDFILL

What can you do with a pair of scissors? Tidy up old rugs of course, says Aqeela. In this super quick post, Aqeela shares an equally super quick tip on how you can breathe new life into old rugs. All you need is a pair of scissors, a steady hand and a good eye for straight lines. It will save you buying new or dumping that old faithful rug in landfill.

RAG RUG TUTORIAL

Speaking of rugs, if you fancy something crafty to do to while away the long winter nights, Steffi has got a fabulous tutorial for making rag rugs. She’s made her own yarn from t-shirts (bows down) and has been busy brightening up her home. “It’s an ideal starter project, and quite satisfying because it’s so super quick, while giving the beginner plenty of single crochet  practice.” she says. Quite. What are you waiting for?

RECYCLE CHRISTMAS CARDS

Get out the glitter and glue, this one is a brilliant way to entertain the kids. If you haven’t recycled your Christmas cards yet, Jackie has 4 crafty ideas for reuse including her favourite of making a box and a garland as well as charming old timers such as making gift tags or THIS years cards! I feel a Blue Peter moment coming on…

LASAGNE RECIPE

If one of your green resolutions is to cook from scratch, reduce food waste or join in with Meatless Monday, then Katie has a mouth-watering treat for you. Go henceforth to the kitchen and knock up her delicious looking sweet potato and spinach lasagne. I guarantee all that will be left are clean plates and licky lips.

BONUS BOARD

I know I said I’d be highlighting 5 links, but seeing as I’m in the mood for spring already I wanted to give you all the chance to slim your waste to a size zero. Yes our resident bin slimmer is at it again with the launch of her 8 week challenge. Are you fed up of getting up at silly o’clock to cart your rubbish to the kerbside or frustrated because it always seems to be your turn? Put an end to that and enjoy a lie-in for ever under the watchful gaze of Karen Cannard.
