Did you get a chance to watch the recent BritMums Hangout with Marco Pierre White? I think we all could have spoken to him for hours about food…
Once we had finished asking him our questions about turkey (there are some great cooking tips to be had in his answers by the way), I managed to ask Marco about something that gets me really cross as a Brit living abroad – the constant derision of English food, and how it’s quite often (unjustly) perceived to be really bad. He told me to tell people to look at The Michelin Guide, and he’s completely right. Yes, our food might have been a bit suspect decades back, but not any more – and we do indeed have an awful lot to be proud of nowadays.
Here are some of my favourites Foodie Posts from across the Blogosphere this past month. When the standard of cooking at home is this good, it’s also proof that food in England is no longer a laughing matter…
The Good Stuff is a really well put together and informative blog, with lots of great nutritious family recipes as an added bonus. I loved their recent Comic Relief inspired post (a huge well done to Team Honk by the way!) Adventures in Africa where Matt and Corpy talk about African Cuisine, and their latest recipe for Bacon & Pea Risotto had me checking I had all the right ingredients to make it tonight!…
Another inspirational blog is the Fabulous Puffin Diaries. A busy Mum and veritable Wonder-woman, Sarah also produces some pretty beautiful recipes like this Slow Cooked Pork with Orange and Star Anise, her great photographs mean you can almost smell how good this is too…
Rachel Eats is yet another beautiful blog, written by an English girl living in Rome. Her recipe for Lasagna with Artichokes and Ricotta had me hankering after both that particular dish, and her particular location!
A blog from another location that has me drooling (as do most of Louisa’s recipes), is Chez Foti. Her latest recipe Stilton, Walnut and Parsley Pesto spaghetti makes pretty good use of one of my favourite English ingredient – Stilton. You never know how much you take these things for for granted until you can no longer get them easily!!
How to Cook Good Food is another blog with an adventurous cook at the helm, adding a few Cape Gooseberries to a potato salad is not something I would have even thought about doing, but now I am tempted to try! I also love Laura’s recipe for her Seville Orange and Lavender Mother’s Day Cake, and should really have left this page open in our kitchen last Sunday morning!
Another favourite food blogger of mine – English Mum, made another perfect Mother’s Day treat – Lemon Cream Love Heart Biscuits, I wish I had left that page open too…
Recipe Junkie, and View From the Table – two BritMums bloggers who have worked hard to highlight this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight, have come up with all sorts of inspiring recipes that include ethically sourced ingredients, important stuff! And how nice do Green Tea, Cardamom and Vanilla cake and (a very cheeky) Mexican Hot Chocolate sound?
I loved Milk for the Morning Cake’s beautifully written and very moving post, Coffee and Walnut Cupcakes – Comfort Food… It’s so true how food can “give you a hug” when you need it the most.
With St Patrick’s Day just around the corner, it’s over now to Reluctant House Dad, whose Slow Cooked Bacon with Potato Cakes and Colcannon Sauce will add a touch of the Emerald Isle to any kitchen – just don’t forget the Guinness to go with it!
And with Easter following shortly afterwards, here are a couple of alternative Easter Lamb recipes – Them Apples has a gorgeous sounding Braised Neck of Lamb with Apricot and Cinnamon, and the incredibly talented Lavender and Lovage, with her Persian Lamb with Aromatic Cauliflower… both sounding equally delicious!
So with thoughts of Easter and Spring fresh in my mind (Spring is only just arriving here in Bavaria, thankfully), next month’s focus will be on Seasonal Spring food…
Thanks for all your continued inspiration you talented lot!..
About Emma Raphael
Emma Raphael left the UK for Copenhagen in 2009, with her ever-patient husband and two small children. Having enjoyed a couple of years in Scandinavia, Emma and her family found they enjoyed Expat life so much that they now reside in Munich – where the pace of life is relaxed, her language skills are small, and the mountains and bier halls are very large. Being one half of a self-proclaimed foodie couple, Emma enjoys the new produce and restaurants in each new country she resides in, and has made it her mission to convince people that English food no longer deserves the bad rap it once had. She can be found in the kitchen when she’s feeling homesick, trying to recreate comfort food from home. She also has huge passions for travel, photography, art, wine, gardening (although according to her Bavarian neighbours, she’s not much good at that!) and her family (of course)!

Thanks so much for my mention. And I get equally as cross about the poor reputation of British food abroad and find myself becoming quite passionate and defensive about it!. I do miss the multiculturalism of it in particular and the easy ability to eat absolutely whatever you fancy in the UK, whether dining out or shopping for ingredients. Looking forward to checking out all these gorgeous blogs!

These all look so delicious. My husband makes a mean bacon and pea risotto -- we'll have to try this version.
I agree about the reputation of British food. Even in the 10 years I've lived here it's changed enormously and it's a lot easier to find innovative, delicious and affordable food.

Thanks so much for featuring my recipes here! I have to say that British food is something that now on a par with the big guys. We have nothing to fear and I do believe I have had as many great meals here as I have had in any other country. Here's to more people recognising Britain for it's food, represented by both chefs and home cooks!
