Just a few steps off the busy high street, there was an oasis of grass, bright colours and fun free activities. While the grass was ersatz, the shrieks and smiles of the children were real as they got their faces painted, locomoted on frog hoppers and nibbled on ham or cheese sandwiches and sipped from orange juice boxes, all for free.

Morrisons is travelling around England with a pop-up free play space, with its #SaverSummer M Savers Play Park. BritMums visited the one in Acton, North London, and discovered a cheerful place with a cheeky food theme: an oversized lemonade bottle with bubble machine, a “Magical Music Tree” hung with faux food tins – put one up to your ear to hear a different sound each time: ocean waves, gulls, peppy music. There’s a slide that looks like a ketchup bottle where kids end up on a splat of the red stuff…or at least a mat that looks like that. The slide was mobbed during our visit, as was the “spaghetti swing ball”, impaled on a big fork.

Workshops run throughout the day – kite-making, bunting-making and more – run by helpers from Play England, a charity that promotes free and low-cost play.

“Free and low-cost play is cool to do this summer,” says Sarah Willingham, the best known female money saving and consumer champion in the UK, who was at the event with her son and is working with Morrisons to promote the event.

All parents struggle with what to do with the children over the long summer break.

Because of the economy, some families are struggling, and even if you aren’t “it’s never a bad thing to be conscious of how you spend your pennies,” says Willingham.

We just went to this event in Yorkshire today! here is my post about it http://jugglemum.com/2012/08/our-day-at-morrisons-summer-play-parks/

It had useful information to take away like a booklet with play ideas and some recipes, as well as everything we did at the event.
