Education Round-up: From A-Z & a other posts in between

It may be the school summer holidays, but some of us still have education firmly in mind and here’s some wonderful posts to prove it, starting with A for Alphabet…

Boy Mama Teacher Mama has written a terrific post on how to help your child learn the alphabet. There are so many delightful suggestions that I want to learn the alphabet all over again for myself, let alone teaching it to the Tinkerous Toddler.

And carrying on the alphabet theme, over at Little Creative Days, there’s a great post about how to make alphabet dot-to-dot cards and a couple of simple but effective games to play with them once they are made.

Yummy Mummy? Really? is concerned that the results of the Phonic Screening Test will be used to measure children’s ability rather than to measure what ‘method’ of reading they are using. Take a read and share your thoughts with her – and us!

Thinking about sending your child to a Montessori nursery or school? Or simply wondering what all the fuss is about? Well, Lorna Clark over at Mindful Mum has posted ‘What is Montessori?’, which gives a great overview of this particular teaching method.

Over at The Head’s Office, Julia Skinner has gone for a summer dip, a blog dip that is. The idea is that Julia goes ‘Blog Dipping’ into some of the fab class blogs that are springing up around the country and the rest of the world, and then shares them on The Head’s Office blog. Take a look, there are some marvellous blogs featured already.

Do stop by to read this real food for thought post over on Special Needs Jungle, which talks about statistics published by the Department for Education that show pupils with statements are nine times more likes to be permanently excluded from school than those pupils without any SEN. Meanwhile, the number of pupils with statements of SEN receiving one or more fixed period exclusions is six times higher than for pupils with no SEN.

And finally, here’s a very useful read for parents with children part way into the long stretch of summer holiday. The team at RM Education has put together some great ideas for keeping kids switched on and avoiding brain rot during the summer weeks, plus they’ve given the low-down on why it is so important to avoid the learning dip.
