Welcome to April’s round-up of topical issues. This month has seen an important campaign, led by The Children’s Society, calling for the government to strengthen the law to protect 16 and 17-year-olds from sexual exploitation. A bill, introduced by Government in February, could see changes that mean older teenagers are better protected. As the law stands, police cannot step in and protect older teenagers in the same way they can protect children under 16. Education has been a hot topic – with strong reactions on social media, with positive and negative stories, to the government announcement of their intention to convert all schools to academies, and also a campaign encouraging parents to keep their children at home on the 3rd of May as a demonstration against the over-testing of children. Writing Bubble wrote eloquently on her feelings about testing in her post ‘No, Mr Cameron, No.’. You can find more information on the campaign to boycott school to show parent power here. Cogito Ergo Mum also tackles education in her post ‘We don’t need no Department of Education‘ – and this extract sums up my thoughts perfectly:
‘ Life isn’t just about reciting times tables. It’s also about having a passion for what we do, health – mental and physical, resilience, friendships, virtues, self-expression, empathy. Love.‘
Abortion law has been in the news again – both in response to Donald Trump’s outrageous remarks, and to the news that a young girl in Northern Ireland was given a 3 month suspended prison sentence after purchasing abortion pills online. Our Rach responds powerfully to both of these stories in her post on the subject.
April is Autism Awareness month and I have been following a series of posts from Steph’s Two Girls in which she looks back to the earliest days post her daughters diagnosis, and you will also find a blog hop at the bottom of her posts linking to a selection of posts from others on the topic of Autism. The BBC drama, The A Word, which follows a family at the beginning of their journey through Autism diagnosis and acceptance got several people sharing their thoughts on the programme – read the thoughts of Parenting By Numbers, Savette, and Raisie Bay.
