Keren Baker is a mum of 6, including 2 teenagers, 1 tween and she’s still surviving (just!) here she asks you about good friends how did you meet your best friends?
The Internet is a great place for meeting new friends. We can be anyone we choose to be. I could be a stunning, tall model with a perfect physique or have a photo-shopped picture for all you know. We seem to readily accept each other online but real life can be a different story.
How many really good friends have you made recently?
Here’s one story…
My number 4 had started school. Being a big family means that in the school playground I’m often flitting between friends & places on the yard (I have to go to different doors to collect each kid from). I’ve got good friends further up the school years but you have to begin again when one of yours starts in Reception.
This day, I’d invited a new Mum for coffee. We were chatting. She seemed really lovely.
There’s always a dance. You kinda skirt around topics and try and suss out each other. Gently tiptoeing, trying to work out are they a ‘fit’ with you? Will they judge everything you say negatively and are they one of these perfect types who would be way too high maintenance?
I decided to risk it. We were talking about cliques in the playground.
As I opened my mouth, I knew that what was about to come out would head one of two ways. She would quite possibly run screaming for the hills wondering who this intense person with possible stalker like qualities could be. Or she just might agree with me.
‘Umm, don’t you get a bit fed up of the superficial conversations? There are only so many chats about nappies, reading books and lost uniforms I can take’.
I continued a little more hesitatingly…
‘I’d much rather have real friends that talk about genuine things. I sometimes find those types of friends much harder to find’.
There. I’d said it.
I’m a girl who often wears her heart on her sleeve. It was a moment of either tentative bravery or abject madness but I was wondering where all the people prepared to risk real friendship had gone?
Rather than a raised eyebrow and a quick excuse to dash off, there was complete relief on her face. It was like a barrier had just been demolished. We laughed and connected, and over the next few weeks and months we began to become firm friends. In fact over the past few years she has become one of my most valued friends. We have shared our hearts and I’m richer for it.
I don’t try and make every new person I meet my next best friend, but sometimes it’s just worth risking honesty and laying yourself bare.
I can’t guarantee it’ll work every time – but who knows how many amazing people you might miss if you don’t?
Do you stick with the friends you’ve got and would you ever try this risky strategy?!

This is such a tricky point for me at the mo. We have moved mid school year to a completely different area and both me and my 5 year old are finding it hard to make friends.
Poor poppet has had the same friends for as long as she remembers and the nursery parents had become school parents and true dear friends - the bonding that happens on a commuter train is amazing.
But, now I say hello in the playground but that is it. And little girl misses her best friend dreadfully and i worry when she says she had no one to play with, probably because I know how it feels!

So tough. Moving can be so tricky. Really hope your daughter settles soon. I've found my kids settle more quickly than I have. Hope you find some friends who say more than just 'hello' to you x

This is such a timely post for me, as the last few days I have been thinking about this exact topic A LOT. In fact the two ladies who make me think about this subject, I have seen recently, having spent yesterday with one, and today with the other. One's been a friend since my job before last, and the other a "parent" friend. They have quickly become BFF, and I'd be lost without them. Just today I was thinking, I wish I was friends with them decades ago, so that they could have been at my wedding; only because I know they'd have loved it. In terms of online, Kate IS a diamond and I would be lost without Anya Harris :-) Liska x

I agree entirely. I would have loved to have met some of mine a while back too- although meeting new friends has made me keep trying & I've got some lovely recent ones.

I am a heart of my sleeve kind of person too. My two are past the playground stage but I have good friends from those times. I am a people person, I love all sorts of people of different ages. When it comes to friends though they know that I am who I am and generally I can spot a lovely future friend from one that is a surface only personality!!!
Really good friends are hard to come by and so worth having :-)

Sounds like you've got good instincts. I agree about them being hard to come by although most of my best friends have been met more recently.

I have taken a risk and it's backfired, more than once! I am very self contained but would happily make new friends, it just doesn't seem to have worked for me recently. I have met and am meeting great people online, maybe because I find it easier to be myself. I totally agree with you about the school playground thing.

Don't give up! It has backfired for me too- if I'd not tried that day- I'd have missed out so much. Hoping it works for you next time!

Hayley is amazing in a myriad of ways so it is easy to be proud to call her my friend. She is my friend because she "gets me" and I hope she feels the same too.

I bet she does! Women have such a special way of connecting with each other. Friendships are rare treasures.
