Video Round-up: Sun, sport and prizes

So how was it for you you? Summer?  Long, hot and sizzling? Or was it over in a flash? Did you keep up with your blog, or take a well earned holiday from blogging? I didn’t, I meant to, but it didn’t happen.

Did you manage catch some memories on video? My husband kept reminding me, as I slaved over a hot Moviemaker while the rest of the family ran round the garden, that we’d love looking back on the videos I made. He was right. So, this months video round up features some of your some lovely holiday memories, some Olympics inspired antics, plus some ideas for how your video could make you rich.

In case you’re wondering, the lovely Ruth from Geek Mummy has moved onto a new project and Britmums asked me to step in.  I’m Penny from Alexander Residence. I used to teach drama,  film and media, until I had kids, which makes me vaguely qualified to talk about video I guess. Although I confess, for the first time in ages I’m actually making videos myself, instead of teaching teenagers how not to make another Jackass.

Summer loving, happened so fast

This Summer I went montage crazy and edited together bits of our review trip to Camp Bestival and looked back nostalgically at our great British seaside trip to Sand Le Mere holiday village in North Yorkshire.

The Mummy Whisperer, who is an expert in making life easier for mums, cleverly delegated the holiday vlogging to her beautiful children.    Here’s the wonderful Curly Headed boy behind the camera, in Normandy at a Siblu park . Lisa has also reviewed Just So festival, not  just from her own perspective, but from that of other festival goers too, which makes for a really informative review. It finishes with a very sweet video clip of Little Dimples dancing to Louis Barabbas, sometimes all you need is a video snippet to perfectly bottle the atmosphere for your readers.

Dancing kids are so brilliant right?  It’s amazing what they can pull off, even when restrained by a car seat.  Check out Lauren’s Spud and Spike taking on the Spice Girls. I want Lauren to do me a car playlist, it looks like loads of fun in the Spud and Spike mobile!

You can’t beat a bit of free messy play.  There are things that make truly lasting summer memories, like climbing trees, damming rivers, running through fields . Aly from Plus2point4 made a video of playing by the river, ’tis the stuff of childhood legend.

Olympic Fever

Lou from The Archers at the Larches reports the family devised their own sports events after the children’s sports days were cancelled, thanks to the great British weather.  Larches at the Arches is a lovely insight into rural life, and for me, a much needed escape from suburbia.  The Lamb Dash 100m sprint  is just one of the sports events the family devised for their entertainment, and now yours.

Jenny at Cheetahs in my Shoes was similarly inspired to stage great sporting events in her back garden.  It was brilliant to see one family so amazingly inspired by the Olympics.  You’ll have to read the post to find out just how inspired. This is the stuff children will remember for years to come and love to watch back. Here is the family’s Garden Triathalon.

September inspiration

I love that video has the power to take us to places we maybe haven’t had the opportunity to go, and to challenge the way we see things. Tom over at The Future’s Rosie has a really inspiring campaign on the go around challenging myths about  Downs Syndrome. His video of Rosie babbling is just brilliant.  It was a real honour to meet Rosie, such a vocal and wonderful conversationalist and Tom’s banter is brilliant too. Please help Tom’s campaign, he’s made some excellent, shareable resources.

Have you asked your children what their best bits of summer were?  Bet they weren’t the things your expected right?  Becky from Baby Budgeting vlogged about keeping a gratitude journal with her children over the Summer.  It’s never to late to help your children to capture some memories of their Summer. I love the way Becky has helped her children explore values, gratitude and pleasure.  Becky  has the most soothing voice.  She’s started a weekly podcast over at Family Budgeting which is like a relaxation session to listen to.

I couldn’t leave you without some hope for the back to school marathon many of us are embarking on.  If late nights and lack of childcare over the holiday season have taken their toll, if you’re  jet lagged, well then the lovely Nadine at Juggle Mum has something for you. Nadine is oh-so-watchable, and the most lovely person to chat to off camera too. Here she tells you How to hide dark eye circles.

Newsflash

I have been really amazed by one particular genre of videos, yes I am talking about the new baby announcement video.  This genre has explored numerous sub genres, hybrids, film spoofs, animation, there seems to be no end to its creativity.  So do go and check out how Danielle, of Blog by Baby revealed the gender of her baby in Pregnancy Diary: Boy or Girl.  It involves cake, what you waiting for?

Prizes

Our Summer ended yesterday with Di, of Super Lucky, who has been educating me in the rather exciting world of comping.  She won a Street Party Bus from Great Little Ideas and invited us to come along.  After winning a few jars of pasta sauce on the hoopla we were hooked, so I’ve been swotting up on comping. Di champions comps that have a level of skill for entry, I loved her recent post in which she shares some of the videos she has entered into competitions Di has so much fun entering competitions and the creative challenge involved in some of them really surprised me. How do you feel about video competitions?
