Travel Round-up: Camping, Cornwall & Cologne

Travel Round-up: Camping, Cornwall & Cologne

travel round upCan’t quite believe a week has gone by since the weekend of the BritMums Live conference. My first ever blogging conference was hugely enjoyable: meeting blog buddies, putting names to faces, feeling I was part of a warm, welcoming community. Travelling alone was something I hadn’t done in a long time: certainly I haven’t stayed overnight in a hotel on my own for a good few years. I didn’t know whether to sleep on the left or right side of the double bed so opted for the middle, stretched myself out and then couldn’t sleep a wink.

Mich from Mummy From The Heart has also managed a weekend away without the family, on a relaxing ladies’ retreat. However, her family also went away without her, spending the time camping. Compare the two breaks in her post, A Tale of Two Weekends, and pick your favourite.

I’ve spotted a lot of camping tales across the blogging community this month. Mostly Yummy Mummy explains why, even when the weather isn’t kind, you are creating memories for your children: The one where we sprung a leak. I sensed the same passion for the small things which make camping special on the blog, Random Rantings of a Tattooed Mummy: Why I love camping

Someone else enjoying their holidays in Britain is Selena from Oh, the places we will go. I met Selena at the Expat’s meal out during the BritMums conference (I’m not an expat, but managed to sneak along) and, on my return, decided to check out her blog. Join Selena on her trip to Plymouth, Polperro and Penzance and admire the beautiful photos which took my breath away.

Let’s pop across the Channel to the rest of Europe. In Funky Wellies’ Random Thoughts we are treated to chocolate, cocktails and Jon Bon Jovi’s jeans in a Weekend in Cologne. Meanwhile Potty Mummy from The Potty Diaries leaves her home in Russia for a few days in Holland with her family: I Amsterdam

Further afield, Tara from Sticky Fingers won a trip to Disneyland Florida at last year’s BritMums Live.  It wasn’t without drama but her posts and photographs show how fabulous this destination is for a young family: A week at Disney Theme Parks. In Pictures. If that doesn’t satisfy your Disney cravings, there are plenty of laughs to be found with Laura, Are we nearly there yet, Mummy? Laura was one of a group of lucky bloggers invited to Orlando on a press trip. Go green with envy as you read this post with the longest and silliest title I’ve seen for ages: The Florida Diaries – Part 1 – Butterscotch pudding, karaoke, wet bottoms, ButterBeer moustaches, sex noises and feeling the wind in my hair.

Finally I have chosen a post I read a few weeks ago, written by Steve from Bloggertropolis. Steve was a finalist in the writing category (Lit!) of the BritMums Brilliance in Blogging awards. Although not really a parent blogger, Steve’s eclectic mix of posts always make for a great read. This post, Helium, describes perfectly the bittersweet emotions of having a holiday. It’s a very special piece of writing which stops you in your tracks and makes you wish you had written it yourself.

I will soon be off to Sweden for our summer trip so next month’s travel round-up will be on Monday 13 August. As I will be up to my eyes in dirty washing in the days before that, I’d be grateful if you could point me in the direction of good travel writing over the next few weeks, to make my life easier. Tweet me at @mumsgoneto or via my blog, Mum’s Gone To... Any travel posts I’ve not managed to include this month, please add to the linky below.

About Trish Burgess

Trish Burgess started her blog ‘Mum’s Gone To…’ with a series of posts called ‘Mum's Gone To Iceland' where she was extremely ill on a whale-watching trip and thought she would die snow-mobiling on a glacier. Thankfully she survived and continued with less scary family trips: ‘Mum’s Gone To…Canada, Cyprus, Barcelona, Berlin etc. Originally from Newcastle upon Tyne she now lives in South Lincolnshire and travels with her husband and occasionally with her son, who is now at university. Trish can be found on Twitter at @mumsgoneto

Thanks Liz. And thanks for adding your link to Martinhal resort in Portugal: a fabulous place where we spent our summer hols last year. You're right, it's perfect for families, whether children are little like your daughter or a big teen like mine!
