BritMums took 7 family bloggers to discover the French Ardennes!
For quick breaks to longer stays, we’d heard about how great the Ardennes is for families with kids of all ages (including grown-ups). To put that to the test BritMums took a group of influential family travel bloggers to the area to play, see, eat and drink our way around the area. What we discovered was one of the best, greenest, outdoorsy, quirky places to go in France. Read on to discover why…
You might decide to take your partner, your children, even your parents. Here’s the group we set off with: Susanna from A Modern Mother, Jennifer from Jenography, Maria from One Tiny Leap, Nell from the Pigeon Pair and Me Katja from Globetotting Daisy from Dais Like These Family Travel Blog and Sima from the Curious Pixie
Sponsored by the Ardennes Tourist Board, we took the Eurostar to Lille and then travelled on to Charleville-Mézières as a base to explore the natural beauty of the Meuse River and Semoy Valleys. Charleville-Mézières is the puppet capital of the world, hosting the bi-annual the world puppet festival!
What we did in The Ardennes
We canoed down the Semoy River, cycled along the 75-mile Trans-Ardennes path on the River Meuse and flew like a bird at 110 metres above the river and 100 metres an hour on the Fantasticable zipline! Then we explored the city of Sedan, which is best known for having the largest fortified castle in Europe, with 7 floors. One of the most exciting bits: We stayed there, at the castle hotel situated within in the imposing castle walls!
And of course we ate and drank our way through the Ardennes, trying local specialties like Salad du Lard, wild boar and Galette a sucre “Sugar pie” — kind of like brioche with a tempting sugary crust.
Even as we headed to the train station in Reims for a quick trip back to Paris and then onto the Eurostar, we couldn’t miss a stop at Ardwen, the largest craft beer producer in the region, made by an Ardennais family. We highly recommend Hop’s Cure, a light beer with a fresh finish that captured Medaille d’argent Paris 2018.
