Special needs Round-up

Hello, I hope Easter was fun for all of you.  I had an exciting Easter, signing up as a Stella & Dot stylist. One piece I am very proud of is the Shine bracelet.  Until the end of April ­20% of proceeds from the sale of the Shine Bracelet will be donated to The National Autistic Society. Help us shine the light on Autism.

Aleyna finds school holidays tricky, her routine is broken, she misses the structure and it is always a bit hectic.  I love having her home but I am not ashamed to say I breathed a sigh of relief on Monday.

So onto my monthly round-up.  The blogosphere goes fairly quiet over the holidays but there were still some real gems out there.

V lives in a world of uncertainty, still not knowing whether her little girl’s needs are down to a genetic disorder or as a result of her newborn problems.  This is something I resonate with.  V is pregnant with her second child and she talks here about the feelings she is going through and the worries she has in What if it all happens again?

Caroline writes the lovely blog Mum to Chromo Boy about her 8 year old son who has a rare genetic condition.  Caroline’s fantastic post Acceptance or hope deals with the emotions that she has gone through over the years and how she beseeches professionals to understand that when parents have hope for their disabled child, this should not be read as a failure to accept.

I absolutely love this post from Stephanie who blogs at Was this in the Plan??  Stephanie’s little girl Daisy has Costello’s Disease, a rare genetic condition.  The right to be heard describes the wonderful communication between mother and daughter, yet this communication is inaudible.  Daisy signs and is becoming fluent thanks to some amazing support groups.  The Mother’s Day card that they translated from Daisy brought a tear to my eye.

I was so pleased when Pink Odballs linked up last month.  I love discovering new blogs through this linky.  This post tackles the subject of bullying and in particular bullying surrounding children with autism/aspergers.  Also, please read Pink Odballs’ “About Me“.  It is incredible.

Hayley writes the beautiful blog Downs Side Up.  I love the description of her blog; ” Thoughts and experiences for those involved in raising a child with Down’s Syndrome. We are gently changing perceptions from within hearts”.  I have written before about people really not knowing what to say when they find out your child has been diagnosed with special needs.  This fantastic post deals with this subject succinctly, practically and also emotionally.  I believe everyone should read What to say when a baby is born with Downs Syndrome.

Occasionally there are posts that make me cry, smile and get goosebumps all over.  The post written by Stacie at Mama Lewis is one of those.  In 2009 May suffered severe brain damage due to oxygen deprivation at birth.  May is a fighter, bouncy and happy and she loves music.  This wonderful wonderful post, Yes May but is it art? describes how May’s love of music has extended to the London Symphony Orchestra.

Zoe’s blog Tricky Customer is one of my favourites.  Zoe’s little boy Sam has the rare genetic condition ARX.  Sam is defying all odds and in this post his mum talks about the milestones in Sam’s life, The ultimate milestone.  I challenge you to read this without welling up.
