May is turning out to be one heck of a month. First and foremost, it’s the month my little girl was born, so we’ve had lots of birthday celebrations (which means lots of photo shoots for Baby. Thankfully, she seems to enjoy them). I also photographed the Queen last week as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations, which was an amazing experience. And, um, next week, I’m taking a few shots of Richard Branson. I’m not sure my little heart can take all this excitement.
I’m also preparing my talk for BritMums Live! at the end of June. I hope to see you there, as I think you’ll enjoy what I have to say about Advanced Photography. It’s a 9:30 slot, though, and the room only seats about 70, so get there early and bring coffee!
With all this going on, my photography post this month doesn’t really have a theme, but I do have some pretty amazing blogs to share:
Then and Now – It’s not often that a series of photographs strikes me as strongly as these ones did. It’s like Dear Photograph, but on historical speed. Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov found old photos and then travelled to the same spots, photographed the location in modern day, and married the two shots together. The results shown here on PetaPixel are thought-provoking and emotional. I was especially moved by the one of the tourist taking a picture of the Eiffel Tower, where Hitler once posed.
360 Degree Tours – One night I was sitting in bed, waiting for my husband to turn off his phone and give me a cuddle, but he was too involved in this website to care! You can lose hours of your life here, just looking at 360 degree tours of places all over the world. It’s like going on holiday without ever leaving your bedroom.
A slice of Tokyo – I’ve never been to Tokyo (it’s on the list), but I love the way the photography in Conversation Pieces shows the cute, almost whimsical side of the great Japanese city. Yes, this is the country that created Hello, Kitty! and hires movie stars to endorse every product under the sun. (E tu, Richard Gere?)
Camera pretty – This isn’t so much about the photography as about the cute camera straps. You mean they don’t have to be ugly?! Thank you, a Diary of Lovely, for pointing them out.
Decorating with little pictures – With more and more people relying on smartphones, Instagram and Hipstamatic to document their lives, it would be nice to have some way to put the images up in our homes. Here are some ideas.
Barbie and Ken get married – I definitely had a wish-I’d-thought of that moment when I saw this post on French photographer Beatrice de Guigne’s website. So funny. Well, I wish them all the happiness in the world. Ken’s ushers are particularly amusing.

I wish there was the same hello kitty 35th anniversary x tokidoki print, but shrunk to a small scale, and covering a denaro a la tokidoki for le sportsac! (obviously with a matching hello kitty qee). Is it just me or does it seem like the designers should read these message boards and design exactly what we want?

Hi my little girl created a Hello Kitty 35thanniversary xtokidoki print from the computer, we cut it out and put it into one of the pink and purple Kidzpod lunchboxes - it looked brilliarnt and everyone wanted to know where she had got it from. The kidzpod is a washable and wipeable lunchbox but we use it to put bits and bobs init when we go out on a car journeyaswell.You can change the picture on the front to what ever you want. we have even put hellokitty wrapping paper and a birthday card (!) in it.
