BritMum’s Monthly Film Reviews: What’s on DVD?

May’s a great month for the movies with the fabulous Cannes Film Festival in full force-I’m often there and love the glamour, red carpet screenings and extravagant yacht parties-ooh la la indeed! However ‘with bump’ this year and not enough energy to fully appreciate it all, I opted out-promising to attend again next year- but I did put my feet firmly up and watched the latest dvd’s so you can choose the best that’s out there, right now. (You can read about my previous time in Cannes here titled ‘Cannes Darling‘ too if you fancy).

DVD REVIEWS:

Puss in Boots:

It’s wrong to fancy a cat isn’t it? But what if what if the ‘pussy’ (I know, totally dubious term) in question is voiced by Antonio Banderas? Not so wrong now is it? Excuse me, I’m pregnant so let’s blame it on the ‘hormonies’-one more time won’t hurt! Long before meeting Shrek, Puss in Boots: outlaw, lover, witty feline sets off on an adventure with street smart Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and his unreliable best friend Humpty Dumpty ( Zach Galifianakis ) to save his town. Witty, engaging fun for all the family (and that means you too) this is one to watch (as long as you’re not a dog lover). Miaow…

Woman in Black

Unsure Daniel ‘Potter’ Radcliffe fully pulls off a convincing performance in this- as he plays a morose lawyer who travels to a remote village to tackle a vengeful lady ghost set on terrorising the locals. Jump in your seat direction and a powerful script from Mrs Jonathan Ross: Jane Goldman, this is not for the faint hearted…or Harry Potter fans to be honest.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

Heart stoppingly beautiful and complex 3D motion capture animation at the hands of Steven Spielberg, this exciting tale follows Tintin the intrepid reporter as he embarks on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship facing kidnap and conflict at every turn. Unmissable, thrilling fun with Jamie Bell as Tintin and Daniel Craig and Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock and Sakharine. Get ready for a rough ride!

Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol

The fourth movie spin-off of TV espionage series Mission: Impossible lead by ‘I do my own stunts’ Tom Cruise- the villain this time is Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist), a crazy Swedish scientist trying to create a third world war by inciting conflict between Russia and the US, his end goal to kill civilisation and make a cleansed new world. Nice. With heart in mouth stunning sequences featuring Cruise clinging to a plate glass surface of the 130^th floor of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa tower with only adhesive gloves to save him (Mr Tumble would be proud) to crazy chases and buildings being blown up all over the world, you’ll be on the edge of your three piece throughout. I do love a bit of Tom Cruise action, don’t you?
