#BML17: Am I Number 5?

Am I Number 5?

1 in 5 women experience heavy menstrual bleeding, or heavy periods – that’s over 4 million women in the UK. Many women can feel that their periods become heavier after having children, making the topic even more relevant for mums and mums to be.

Are heavy periods normal?

Despite the numbers affected, many accept heavy periods as a normal part of being a woman, and don’t recognise it as a medical condition for which there is a range of treatment options available.

Not only do heavy periods have a significant physical and emotional impact, it’s also a topic which understandably isn’t commonly discussed.

Launching at #BML17, Am I Number 5? is an awareness campaign to help women recognise and understand heavy periods as a common condition which can be treated, empowering them to have informed conversations with their GP, if appropriate, and indeed to be confident in wearing white again. The campaign aims to prompt thought and discussion amongst women…around whether they are one of the one in five affected.

Get your nails painted at the stand!

As part of the Am I Number 5? campaign, women will be painting their nails, with one nail a different colour to the rest, representing the one in five women living with the condition. There will be two manicurists at the stand ready and waiting to decorate your nails!

We’d love you to get involved, visit the stand and share a picture of your beautifully painted nails. Not only will you be kickstarting the campaign, for every photo shared a donation will be made to women’s health charities.

At the stand, you’ll also be able to…

  • enter a prize draw to win £150 ‘The White Company’ voucher
  • chat to expert Dr Martin Godfrey (time allocated on a first come first served basis)
  • learn more about heavy periods
  • see latest survey of UK women about impact of heavy periods
  • chat to the team about getting involved in the campaign
