Blogging Tips Round-up: Basic SEO tips

You spend all that time writing a brilliant blog post and really do want people to read it don’t you? Here’s where a little SEO knowledge comes into play.

There are a few simple things you can do once your post is written to help ensure it can be found online by others not just the family members you’ve shared it with on your blogs’ Facebook page – there is a whole world out there so here are a few simple things you can do to help get it along.

So lets start with the basics – what is SEO? It stands for Search Engine Optimisation, it means telling the search engines what your post is about otherwise how will they know and how will someone search for your post, or a topic you’ve written about? They won’t be able to is the quick answer.

Aby, You Baby Me Mummy has written a very comprehensive guide on optimising SEO within your posts and has included 13 tips to help maximise traffic. She talks about everything from the importance of choosing your blog title, choosing your keywords carefully and even why the length of your posts are important – big tip here, little is often more as readers may not have time or want to read a huge post. I try to aim for 300-500 words personally, if you have more to add then why not break it down into two separate posts.

As well as optimising your written work you can optimise the images you use too by adding alt tags to them, Jane has a great guide on adding these to WordPress posts if you are on Blogger it is very simple to do – add your image as usual and click on it so your options appear below the image, choose properties and add your title to the top box (what you want your image to display when you hover over a published post) and add a choice few keywords in the bottom box.
