Adoption & Fostering Round-up

So by the time this post goes live BritMums will have been and all the fantastic blogging fun will be  over. Plus there is the small matter of the BiB awards which, if you didn’t already know, The Adoption Social is a finalist for in the Social Media category. We are so honoured to have reached this point, especially as we only launched the site the same week as BritMums last year. But enough about that and onwards with the many, many great blogs out there talking adoption and fostering.

I will start with fostering and say we would still like to hear about more blogs out there writing about the realities of being a foster parent. Contact us please if you are a foster carer blogger.

This post from the UK Fostering website is a poem about being placed with a new foster carer, it really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, thinking about all those frightening thoughts a child must go through.

There are always some great posts on the Blue Sky fostering site, this one about fostering siblings highlights the difficult choice that social workers sometimes make about when it’s right to keep siblings together and when it’s best for them to be separated.

On the adoption front I’ve chosen three posts this month written by adoptees. I think it’s so valuable to read these post and learn how adopted children feel about the experience of being adopted.

Sally Donovan’s son has written a great post about the highs and lows of his life in this post My Holiday.

This website, where a collection of women write about their adoptee experiences, is also very insightful. I found this post, is it my story or yours very thought provoking on the subject of sharing a child’s history with them.

The final post in this section is not written by an adoptee, not in the full, but it offers a glimpse of a child’s perception of the adoption process. So come and meet Mumdrah through the eyes of a very clever little lady.

I want to now offer up some huge respect for Fiona Ferguson, an adopter whose daughters are now grown and finding their own way in life. This post, life after adoption, is a reflection on what is next for her.

This post, he’s ours, really brings to the fore the massive emotions that going through the legal part of adopting can evoke.

And finally I bring you two amusing post because as all those adopters out their know, if we don’t often laugh then the tears would be all consuming.

I love this blog and I love how this dad compares himself to the hapless hotelier Basil Fawlty.

And I dare you not to smile at this photo story from pie n’ ice-cream.
