Adoption and Fostering Round Up

Choosing this month’s round up has not been easy, there have been a lot of great posts out there. You can always find a lot of these great post yourself on The Adoption Social, Weekly Adoption Shout Out, #WASO, but I very happy to give you a selection of some of my favourites I’ve spotted in the last month, from #WASO and beyond.

First I want to talk about the 3 part series Channel 4 have run over the last 3 weeks called 15000 Kids and Counting following the work of social workers, from removing a child from their birth family through to placing a child with an adoptive family. I’m always very proud of how passionate the adoption community is on the subject of “adoption “ (obvious really) and this programme created plenty of discussion on twitter and on blogs. Here is a selection of those posts.

I think for many of the adopters watching the programme triggered memories of their own experiences or deeply reminded them of their own child/children’s story. This was very much the case for Life With Katie where Gem posted a heartfelt but balanced and well considered post about the first episode.

On the Road to Adoption  also featured a compassionate post after episode one.

On the Blog Stickleberry the outcome was more traumatic here, as her adopted son also viewed the programme.

At All Aboard the Trauma Train the hard hitting questions were asked.

And for 3 Girls Together, programme two, reminded mum of the strength she needs for her family.

I’ve been delighted to see a number of posts from adoptees in the last month. I think it is always beneficial to read about adoptees experiences, it gives an insight into how our adopted children my view their world.

Two adoptees speak about their differing experiences of adoption in Adoption Picture Book with Roots and The Flower That was Picked – Being Adopted Interestingly, although their experiences differ ,both bloggers aim to create a resource for adoptive parents.

A brave and very emotional piece comes from Jazz Boorman blogging at All Aboard The Trauma Train. My Name is Jazz: Hart Broken is about the loss of her father.

I’m still trying to find some great fostering blogs to share with you and in my search have discovered The Fostering Network which features a blog, contributed to by lots of different bloggers. If you are a blogging Foster Carer please get in touch.

It’s also been great to see blogger, Life with Katie, featuring a series of contributions from The National Fostering Agency, the series starts with this insightful piece, A Few Things Foster Parents Would Like Other People to Know.

This next piece really interested me as I was horrified to hear in the news, plans to introduce more structured learning for children as young as two. Here Nicola Marshall of Brave Hearts Education looks at how this may affected the adopted child in This is my Childhood there will be no Other

The Misadventures of an Adoptive Dad recently wrote about the complexity of taking a Holiday, I’m sure many of you can relate the many worries and strain going away can bring, I know I did.

And Finally I always love to read about the little places we find positivity and progress and this post  from Reluctant Football Mum identified some of The little Things we all find joy and a smile in.
