Adoption and Fostering Round-up: School and fostering

The Adoption and Fostering Round-up is back, after a brief break over the summer holidays, so let’s get straight on with it.

School can be such a difficult part of any child’s life, but for those who are adopted or even fostered it is an enormous daily mountain to climb. So it is no surprise that many of you have been compelled to write about going back to school.

In this post, I really feel for one of The Family of Five, facing some very inappropriate and insensitive homework.

Here we are asked to remember how challenging back to school can be for a teacher, especially when they are trying to be therapeutic, they too make mistakes.

Someone here has their first day at school and all the preparation done leading up to the big day, does seem to have paid off but, as always there are still concerns.

This school seems to be doing well in the attachment stakes. This post about an attachment aware school, makes great suggestions of how children with attachment issues can be best supported in school.

Often it is thought that LAC (Looked After Children) may be supported with greater concern in our education system. However this post about foster children and school reveals that in a mainstream setting, schools are not always supportive of their life experiences.

Whilst we are on the subject of fostering, I am finding this blog, writing about being fostered in the 1970’s, really enlightening. Here are two posts I’ve really enjoyed one on good role models and another on family traditions.

I always love a post that causes a little reflection and this one about the things you miss and have missed is very moving.

So almost finished and it’s good to bring a smile to everyone’s faces at the end. I defy you to not grin broadly at this post about one adoptees positive experiences.

And finally, I want to talk to you about a little award ceremony going on during National Adoption Week, starting on Monday 19^th October. The Adoption Social, Suddenly Mummy and Misadventures of an Adoptive Dad are all nominated.  All these blogs I feel are very deserving of their nominations, and do a great job of sharing experiences and supporting the adoption community, and are therefore all well worth a read. I would obviously love it for The Adoption Social to win but wish both other blogs the best of luck on the day.
