5 unmissable things to do in Yorkshire with the kids

1. Have a Day at the Seaside
There are loads of seaside towns on the Yorkshire coast, but one of our favourites is the Victorian seaside town of Filey. One of the best things about Filey is the beach – at over 7 miles long it never gets busy. After sandcastle building and splashing in the sea, you can go for a walk on Filey Brigg, which is a peninsula stretching out into the North Sea. The views from the top are spectacular, and there are some great rock pools at the bottom so don’t forget your fishing net and bucket. The kids will love Glen Gardens at the other side of the Bay. Once you climb the steps to this cliff top park, you find beautifully manicured gardens, a playground, crazy golf, a boating lake and a café which serves ice cream.

Finally, don’t leave Filey without having a potter round the independent shops and tea rooms in the town centre. Grab some fish and chips (we love Inghams on Belle Vue Street) and eat them on the cliff tops overlooking Filey Bay and Flamborough Lighthouse in the distance.

2. Go on a steam ride across the Yorkshire Moors
Harry Potter Fans will love getting a train from Hogsmeade Station (adults will remember this as Aidensfield in Heartbeat) to Whitby across the stunning North York Moors. The steam trains depart from March to October and let you travel in style to this famous fishing town, where you can hit the beach or explore the myriad of shops in the tiny streets overlooking the harbour. There are loads of boat trips from Whitby Harbour, and the kids will love playing at Pannett Park.

3. Have a day out a York
This historic city has loads of kid friendly attractions – start with the world famous National Railway Museum next to York train station, and continue the transport theme with a boat trip along the picturesque River Ouze. The Museum Gardens alongside the river are great for a picnic on a sunny day, and the York Chocolate Story is a great way to find out about the history of chocolate making in York (and you can make your own chocolate bar!)

4. Head to the Yorkshire Dales
You can’t go to Yorkshire without visiting the Yorkshire Dales. The walk between Malham Cove and Janet’s Foss is a great for kids – it is just 3.9 miles long and you can climb to the top of the limestone cliffs at Malham Cove and visit Janet’s Foss waterfall afterwards. We also love days out a Bolton Abbey – it is the ideal spot for a picnic and there is a little river beach which the kids will love playing in. There is also the famous Welly Walk which is an adventure / activity trail around the Bolton Abbey Estate which is loads of fun.

5. The Dalby Forest
The Dalby Forest is located at the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It is a wonderful outdoors day out for kids of all ages. There is an amazing WildPlay adventure play area, Go Ape! and new for 2016 a Stick Man Activity Trail. There are also loads of walking trails for all abilities, including a 2 mile woodland walk past a 30 foot waterfall and beck. The Dalby Forest is also famous for its cycling trails. The 2.5 mile Ellerburn Family Cycle Route is traffic free and takes you on a circular route through the forest.
