BritMums team member, Kate Davis-Holmes, recently visited Orlando. In this post, she shares the top 10 things that she and her son Cavanagh enjoyed most.
1. The weather
It was wonderful to step off the plane and to see blue skies and feel the heat. Such a contrast to the snowy conditions we had left behind, we were instantly transported into holiday mood. We had to laugh at Orlando residents complaining it was a little chilly. During the week we were there, it got progressively warmer and we were sporting sun tans even though only there for 5 days. Make sure when visiting Orlando you are equipped with sun cream and hats. Ensure you keep hydrated throughout the day.
2. The variety
Before our trip, we would have identified Orlando with Disney’s Magic Kingdom. By the end of an action-packed week, we knew that Orlando has so much more to offer. Rollercoaster rides for those who like then and some really laid-back activities for those who don’t. Every night, we would read the Kid’s Guide to Orlando which gives a good overview of the major attractions so you know what to look out for when you visit. We strongly advise you to plan your trip carefully in advance to make the most of your time in Orlando.
3. Our hotel – the Nickolodeon Suites Resort
Many hotels claim to be family-friendly but this one really pulls it off. The accommodation is spacious and includes lounge and kitchen areas. The whole hotel is Nickoloden-themed so expect to see Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants regularly. That might be on wallpaper, seating, statues or close up and personal as you have your breakfast. The food choice is superb including options for those who wish to feast and those who want to go for a healthier option. Don’t miss out on the fun to be had at the pool where you can indulge in a little Slime. There is also a good range of shops in the mall.
4. Customer service
Everywhere we went it really did feel as if the people who served us wanted us to really have a great day. It really does put you in a good mood when you feel that people genuinely care about your holiday experience. Airport staff, drivers, waiters, shop assistants and our guides all had excellent levels of customer care. As someone who regularly bemoans bad customer service in the UK, this made all the difference to our holiday. We lost our camera at one of the theme parks and had total confidence that it would be located and returned to us. Here’s to the way Orlando treats its guests!
5. SeaWorld
We loved our day at SeaWorld. Right from arriving, we felt it would be a great day to remember. I loved the space with regular places to stop off to eat or shop. We attended a spectacular show where dolpins and human beings worked in partnership in a moving spectacle. Turtle Trek filled us with awe as we became part of a 3D experience showing the journey of a sea turtle. We stroked penguins and stingrays. We had dinner right up against the whales area with Baby Shamu. This was our favourite theme park combining animals, learning and rides. It was a magical day that we will never forget.
6. The Magic Kingdom
Both of us have wanted to visit the Magic Kingdom and never thought we would so it was a treat to actually be there. It is everything you want it to be and more. There are plenty of rides and Disney characters to see. We had the luxury of dining at the Beauty and the Beast castle where the food and surroundings were out of this world. The famous parade was a joy to behold. When we saw the Cinderella light show and fireworks, our only “wish upon a star” was that we would return with the rest of the family one day.
7. Legoland Florida
Having never visited either of the Legoland outlets in the UK, we were looking forward to this one. We were not disappointed. Our experience started with us receiving a mini-figure which you can swap as you go around the park. This was followed by a peaceful journey up to see the park in its entirety from up on high. We loved Miniland where you can see the Statue of Liberty, the White House and so much more made out of Lego. My son enjoyed driving a car and captaining a boat. It has a more gentle feel than the other parks and is ideal if you have babies or younger children.
8. Universal Studios
Orlando has something for everybody and this is the park I would recommend most to the thrill-seekers and families with teenagers. Our highlight was going on The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. Who wouldn’t enjoy a ride where you are right in the middle of a fight between good and evil? We were impressed with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter which made you feel like you were in the middle of one of the films. We loved dining there and tasting Butterbeer. This is the park I would recommend to those who like scary rides.
9. Dining out
Although our hotel had good food, we dined out twice at Dave and Busters and at Wonderworks. Dave and Busters offered after dinner entertainment of arcades where you won tickets that you could then cash in for prizes. Wonderworks was great as whilst enjoying pizza, you could also enjoy a live magic show.
10. Gatorland
We had not heard of Gatorland before our trip. It has a totally different feel to the other parks and we found it really relaxing after a busy week. I enjoyed strolling round the grounds taking in the alligators and birds. My son was braver and went for the zip-wiring over alligators. He is much braver than I am. We took in a fabulous show that had a real comedy element to it which appealed to us. We were really pleased to have not missed out on Gatorland.
I think it is safe to say that we had a wonderful time and would highly recommend Orlando has a holiday destination for families with children of whatever age.

I'm so with you on the service. I'll be majoring on that in my Orlando posts too. Although even in Orlando, Disney is still the one that has the edge on service over all the others!

Glad you enjoyed yourself. Much better than going in the summer, when it's so hot you really can't enjoy yourself and have to pay through the nose for a hand-held fan that sprays water. We went to the California Legoland last week and both my 9 and 17 year old boys really enjoyed it. The miniland was superb, although we were outraged that it didn't include our hometown, Chicago - famous for its architecture. Will have to write a strongly-worded e-mail. The Star Wars figures dotted about went down a treat too!
