Your Christmas TV: 5 things you need to watch this year

watching tv 800x400

We had a Christmas tradition in our house growing up that we would go out and buy the Christmas edition of the Radio Times, and we would all go through it with a highlighter and mark what we wanted to watch over the holidays, which films were on and what shows.

Mum always insisted on watching ‘Oliver Twist’ which was bound to be on, and we always pretended we would watch the Queen’s speech when in reality we knew full well we’d all be scoffing our faces watching some Christmas special or other. Lovely stuff.

As brand new BritMums TV Critic (ha!) I thought I would bring you a selection of things you could be watching over the next few weeks – festive specials a go go!

1. EastEnders (AKA DeadEnders in our house)

I’ve not watched EE for absolutely years, but I have it on good authority that plenty of you do and that it’s a festive staple. Who will die this year? Peggy? Pauline? What do you mean they are dead already? Oh well – if you want to feel better about yourself and your dysfunctional ‘faaaahmly’ then make sure you give ‘spenders a watch – festively dressed misery guaranteed.

2. Doctor Who

This one isn’t on til the New Year but I’m sure they’ll make a good effort. I gave the first one in this new series a watch to see what a lady Doctor was like and I’m pleased to report that she appeared to be equally as annoying as all her male predecessors – well done Jodes! – so if you love a bit of bizarre, get tucked up in your Tardis and enjoy!

3. Luther

Yassss – who doesn’t love a brooding Idris Elba? Sit down. Personally I cannot wait for the next instalment of the rule bending detective solving some grisly crimes, even if I am still a bit heart broken about old whatsisface getting a shotgun to the particulars at the end of the last series. Let’s hope the deliciously villainous and sociopathical Ruth Wilson features to make up for it.

If you are all bah humbug and don’t have a telly, here are a couple of series I’ve been snuggling up with on Netflix this month:

4. Reign

Spectacularly historically inaccurate historical drama about the life of Mary Queen of Scots. Decadent fashion, magic and lots of hot, hot men in tights. What’s not to like? Except the terrible historical innacuracies. That said I’m not sure I’d actually like to watch a historically accurate show about MQOFS, she didn’t half have it hard.

5. Medici: Masters of Florence

Noticing a theme here? I’m loving a bit of entirely unfeasible historic drama at the moment, this one about the rise of the famed Medici family of Florence. I watched all of this on a hangover, and all the gore and bonking was a marvellous remedy I tell you. Brooding Cosimo Medici all day long please.

Let me know in the comments what you are watching this Christmas!
