As Influencers who use third-party sites, we are at the mercy of algorithms and how companies change them. What’s perhaps most maddening is that they don’t tell us when they make changes and how they affect our content and who sees it. Sometimes it feels we only have whispers, rumours and third- or fourth-hand knowledge we glean from tech blogs.
The lastest post on TechCrunch is second-hand knowledge about the workings of the Instagram feed, but this post was at least generated after a meeting with journalists and Instagram. Here are some of the highlights:
- Feed ranking doesn’t favour video or photos – There’s not a universal preference for one of the other, but Instagram does ‘notice’ whether you like to watch one or the other and shows you more of what you like
- Instagram doesn’t favour Stories or Live or other special features of the app – If you like doing Live or would rather stick to just pictures, they say you needn’t worry that it’s hurting your ranking.
- Instagram does not hide posts in the feed – They say that you’ll see everything posted by everyone you follow if you keep scrolling. Hmm.
- Shadowbanning isn’t a real thing – On this, the Techcrunch article is clear: ‘Instagram says it doesn’t doesn’t hide people’s content for posting too many hashtags’. That’s a relief!
- Instagram doesn’t downrank users for posting too frequently – The Techcrunch article says this is true for frequent posting and other specific behaviors, ‘but it might swap in other content in between someone’s if they rapid-fire separate posts’
