Plastic in our oceans is in the news increasingly so ways to reduce our use of plastic is ever more important. Holy Lama Naturals has spent 20 years developing a plastic free soap that is both kind to the skin and the environment. We asked our writer Lizzie Roles for her opinion on this unique Ayurvedic range.
I’ve always had a love of soap, as a child I collected gift soaps in packs and in different shapes, my favourite soap was shaped into a pair of ballet shoes, and in a perfect ballet shoe pink.
Of course in the end they smashed up against each other and I threw them away, but my love of soap has remained. I was so happy to be asked to review the Holy Lama naturals range of soaps for Britmums.
The first thing I noticed was the packaging, a rustic handmade shell made from the leaf of the areca palm tree. The leaves are moulded into an ‘oyster’ shape which protects the soap from smashing up (would have been useful in my collector days) and I’ve used it as the soap dish straight onto the side of my sink because it looks so interesting and different to the norm, plus it’s perfect for the job.
The other thing I’ve really noticed is the fragrance, the stunning scent fragrances my whole bathroom. The other thing I’ve noticed is how clean my hands are after washing them with Holy Lama soap, sometimes when I towel dry my hands some soap still remains leaving my hands tacky. But not with this soap, and this is something I noticed straight away, all of it comes off and leaves your hands feeling really clean.
Times have changed in our world too, of course, with more knowledge comes more buying intelligence. We care more about ingredients than ever before and of course we care about who makes our products.
While we’ve been getting up to speed with our carbon footprint and buying impact on the world, Holy Lama Naturals has spent over 20 years developing a soap range that not only cares for the skin but also for the planet. Also, the Kerala community is positively impacted due to 80% of the workforce are women, who may have been widowed, deserted by a partner, abused or left as a single parent, and under normal circumstances would have been rejected in a traditionally male dominated society. Work at the factory provides these women with much needed self-confidence and financial independence.
The more I find out about Holy Lama the more I want to shout about their naturals range.
In regards to ingredients, all of the soaps have a base of cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil, the benefits of coconut oil are now really well documented. The amazing fragrances in the naturals range Yogi, Kewra, Curcuma (turmeric), Rainforest (vetivert) come from unique combinations of superior essential oils. Using Ayurvedic principles, these combinations can help balance mind, body and soul.
The soap also doesn’t go mushy or break apart like some soaps can and I just love how rustic and handmade they look, the packaging is perfect for the soap and I would love to receive this as a gift as I’ve not seen anything like it on the market. You can tell a lot of love has gone into making these soaps.
I would recommend anyone try these soaps, All are vegan friendly and are not tested on animals. They are 100% natural with no parabens. I love them!
