Sing Movie Review

SING ticketsSeveral weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be invited to represent BritMums at the official family viewing of #SingMovie in Leicester Square. Sing is a brilliant new film from the creators of Despicable Me, which my daughter is obsessed with (we got her a Minions onesie for Christmas and I was excited to see her little face when she opened it!)

The basic premise of the animated film is ‘animals do the X Factor’; and it was fabulous. My little one was 27 months when we attended and she was rapt throughout almost the entire screening… During the last 5 minutes she could no longer keep her eyes open and conked out curled up on my lap, bless her heart – it was waaaaay past naptime.

This film is in the standard format of down-on-his-luck protagonist (a koala named Buster Moon) in dire straits, making valiant (albeit misguided) efforts to turn his fortunes around. In this case, Buster  (Matthew McConaughey) is attempting to salvage his failing business, only it goes predictably – and spectacularly – wrong.

However, the wonderfully loveable supporting cast, including remarkable mother and housewife Rosita the pig (Reese Witherspoon) and Johnny the gorilla (Taron Egerton) come together to overcome adversity. But – naturally – it’s Meena the elephant (Tori Kelly), a character filled with self-doubt and consumed by a lack of confidence who is the rising star of the singing show.

Hubby and I were in agreement that there are plenty of laughs and the film is sufficiently entertaining for the whole family.

Shhhhh, but something else we reluctantly admitted to each other is that there are one or two moments which unexpectedly had both of us staring hard at the screen to stem the threat of tears.

Yep, that’s pretty embarrassing; but there’s just something about a poignant moment between parent and child (yes, even when animated) that really touches us, isn’t there? And no, I don’t just mean my husband and I. Be honest now: Bambi anyone? No? Okay – The Lion King. Precisely.

As a family we were super impressed and will definitely be returning to the cinema to watch again when the movie is released!
