It’s only a couple of weeks away now, so it’s time to get organised for the biggest event on the blogging calendar – the BritMums Live Annual Blogging Conference!
To get the most out of it, the single, most important investment you can make will be getting to know The Agenda. There will be additions and alterations before the actual days, but study it now, keep an eye on it and check the printed one thoroughly on arrival. Decide which sessions you wish to attend and plan your time accordingly. You will benefit enormously.
Although it is undoubtedly a fun, social occasion to be reckoned with, you’re there for you and in sticking to what you have initially scheduled for yourself, you will increase your enjoyment of the event, connect naturally more with other bloggers with similar interests and come away more satisfied.
There’s nothing wrong with going with the flow if that’s an actual decision, but it can be very disappointing to get home and discover what was on offer after the conference is over. It’s easy to become immersed in conversations, be swept along with the crowd and not pay adequate attention!
There’s also nothing wrong with not always attending something, just to take a little quieter time, or to, perhaps, peruse the incredible array of Sponsors’ stands while they’re not so busy. Indeed, when they’re not inundated, this can be the only way to have a more meaningful conversation. And / or, again, you will meet other like-minded bloggers perhaps just craving some space too.
BritMums Live is a busy blogging conference, so it’s important to be prepared. Being comfortable is a must. Some people pack high heels in their handbags for the Friday evening party, but two whole days in them would cripple most of us. Lots of people wear jeans and t-shirts. Some wear dresses. Think about why you’re going and whether you need a metaphoric professional hat or you’re just really meeting up with your mates.
Another thing to bear in mind is that the inevitable extra adrenaline in your system will you make you a bit warmer than usual, plus, as well, if the last couple of years are anything to go by, there will be a big, heavy, goody bag to carry home, so it’s best to keep baggage to a minimum.
Business cards are only really necessary for popping into the huge variety of brilliant raffles run by the brands, or for handing directly over to them if you’re interested in working together. Bloggers tend to exchange Twitter handles straight into their phones in another attempt to minimise what they’re carrying.
It’s always a surprise to discover just how many blogs we won’t have heard of! There will be around 500 delegates so that’s only natural, but make a list and arrangements prior to it re anyone you will be crushed not to catch.
A great meeting point is the Butterflies’ stand. The BritMums Butterflies are a team of eight very friendly old hands, eager to help anyone else experiencing real ‘Butterflies.’ You don’t have to be new to feel nervous or overwhelmed and we’re there to make sure you’re not alone if you don’t want to be.
However, it really helps not to arrive alone, so it’s a good idea, as Gemma suggests, to try to rally a couple of blogging acquaintances ahead of the event. There are a couple of unofficial meet-ups prior to the official opening of the conference nowadays, for this purpose. If you’re interested, details are in the BritMums Butterflies Facebook Group so please request to join or tweet us with #BritMumsButterflies and we’ll add you. Some bloggers even start their BritMums Live experience by travelling to it together, but if you find yourself floundering at any point, do come and find us.
Here’s a compilation of short videos to help you recognise us while we’re buzzing around, because we won’t all be able to be on our stand at the same time. We’ll still all be on duty and should also be able to provide a table in each talk or workshop, so you can comfortably stick to what you’ve set your heart on and do your own thing. If you find you want to be in two places at the same time, you can always arrange to exchange notes with someone else who does too.
In the meantime, let’s continue to lead the on-line conversation by sharing which exciting sessions and amazing Speakers you’re presently feeling most inspired by!
