June Foodie Round-up: Outdoor food

food round-upSomebody somewhere decided that next week (from the 17th to the 23rd June to be precise) will be National Picnic week in the UK. Of course, because it has now been proclaimed as such, it will mean that sods law will dictate that it will most probably rain. But being British and all, we are used to dealing with such adversities. A little bit of rain won’t stop us from enjoying the wonderful experience that is eating and cooking in the great outdoors. Indeed some of us take it a little too seriously and I have a husband so dedicated to outdoor cooking that he once cooked the Turkey on the barbecue in Siberian temperatures one Scandinavian Christmas morning…

So, what will you be packing in that picnic hamper as well as those brollies, wellies and cagoules (I love that word!)… If you need some Outdoor Food inspiration, look no further:

A picnic wouldn’t be a picnic without some decent bread would it? BiB finalistFeeding Boys and a Firefighter has a huge array of bread based ideas over at hers…

You can never go wrong with a few dips either, check out Lavender and Lovage’s Quick and Easy Salsa with Baked Garlic Pita Chips… Chez Foti tempts taste buds with some fantastically named Fish Dippy Dip Dips too…

Apart from sandwiches, a couple of salads never goes amiss, so I am including Dirty Kitchen Secret’s Moghrabieh Chick Pea and Red Pepper Salad,  and How to Cook Good Food’s Roasted Asparagus, Spring Onion, Chorizo and Butter Bean Salad in this big virtual hamper…

These Croquiche’s from Fab Food For All are such a good idea, so they get shoved in too, as does Cakes Photos Life’s Chicken Mushroom, Asparagus Quiche, which looks truly delicious.

Three more BiB finalists also make our luxury picnic hamper grade, with Delicieux presenting her Savoury Cake with Figs, Bacon and Walnuts, Gourmet Mum with her Turkey Calzone, and Crazy Kitchen with a beautiful Cheese and Roasted Vegetable Picnic Loaf

And if you are thinking of trundling your barbecue along, then here’s some inspiration in that department too… :

Not strictly on the barbecue but how about a Nduja and Burrata Wood Fired Pizza, from Country Wood Smoke and these Dirty Tomahawk Steaks look both intriguing and delicious…

Reluctant House Dad shows us how to make some Twice Cooked Teriyaki Chicken Wings which look delicious, and would go perfectly on the Barbie.   Skinny Taste has these healthy Zucchini & Yakitori Skewers which would go nicely, and Mama Cook’s Sticky Ribs can have pride of place on the grill as well…

Another BiB finalist – English Mum has some wonderful Roasted Barbecue Chicken and Vegetable Skewers which fit wonderfully with the theme, and you could perhaps pair them with these Meatballs pimped by the brilliantly named Bike Lights in the Fruit Bowl… Or how about these Chargrilled Tuna Steaks from Kitchen Goddess in Training?

After all that lot we will definitely need something sweet, so I suggest you have a look at We Don’t Eat Anything with a Face, as they have some brilliant Camping Dessert Ideas

I think Helvetia HandMade’s Easy Smartie Cookies would go down well with any small people, followed by something for the grown ups – a Slow Cooker Lemoncillo Drizzle Cake from Plus 2 Point 4… I think these Fruity Cakey Low GI Vanilla Oat Bars would go down a treat as well from A Mummy Too (our final Bib Finalist this week!)

Enjoy yourselves picnic goers, I have my fingers crossed the rain stays away for you…

But of course I couldn’t leave you without mentioning something nice for Father’s Day on Sunday could I?   How about making this fantastic sounding Ginger Molasses Cake with a Guinness Glaze from Eat Boutique, with that Dad friendly combination of Cake and Beer, you can’t go wrong really

Next month it’s all about Salad.   Hot salads, cold salads, pasta salads, fruit salads – the choice is yours!  If you have a recipe you would like to include, then do please stick it down on the linky below…

A huge good luck to all BiB Food Finalists, I look forward to meeting you at BritMum’s next week!!

About Emma Raphael

Emma Raphael left the UK for Copenhagen in 2009, with her ever-patient husband and two small children. Having enjoyed a couple of years in Scandinavia, Emma and her family found they enjoyed Expat life so much that they now reside in Munich – where the pace of life is relaxed, her language skills are small, and the mountains and bier halls are very large. Being one half of a self-proclaimed foodie couple, Emma enjoys the new produce and restaurants in each new country she resides in, and has made it her mission to convince people that English food no longer deserves the bad rap it once had. She can be found in the kitchen when she’s feeling homesick, trying to recreate comfort food from home. She also has huge passions for travel, photography, art, wine, gardening (although according to her Bavarian neighbours, she’s not much good at that!) and her family (of course)!
