Eroica Britannia, a cycling, lifestyle and family festival in Bakewell, Derbyshire, promises three full days of kid-friendly fun from 17-19 June. We asked Joanna Hunter, who helps out with this local festival, just what makes it so special. Over to Joanna:
1. It’s in the beautiful Great Outdoors
We’re right in the heart of Britain’s most beautiful national park*, the Peak District. You can take part in the IslaBikes Family Ride, a self-guided five-mile cycle along the Monsal Trail. Or just breathe in that beautiful country air. (*It’s possible we might be biased.) When? Saturday
2. It has a real vintage fair
Roll-up, roll-up! We’ve got a fine old-fashioned fair! Join us for thrills and spills aboard the Steam Gallopers, Helter-Skelter, Chairoplane and Tea Cup Ride… and yes, Dodgems! When? Friday-Sunday
3. It has its own Great British Beach
We couldn’t take Bakewell to the beach… so we brought the beach to Bakewell. Bring your buckets and spades and we’ll provide the deck chairs. When? Friday-Sunday
4. It features brilliant bedtime stories
Once upon a time there was a fantastic family day out. And at the end of it, all the under-10s were treated to a 30-minute bedtime story. When? Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7pm.
5. It provides a taste of Pudding Lane
Possibly the only street in Britain purely dedicated to sweets. From chocolate fountains and candyfloss to hot, freshly cooked donuts and all sorts of sugary, sweet-toothed deliciousness – it’s all here. When: Friday – Sunday
6. You’ll get some fantastic face painting
Maybe on Friday you’ll feel like being a lion, but on Sunday you’ll be a bear… No matter what magical beast you conjure up our marvelous face-painters are here to make it happen. When? Friday 12pm-8pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am-8pm
7. Everyone can dress up for Best in Show
It’s not just the cyclists who get to dress up: Best in Show is a competition for everyone – from the best-dressed families to the best-dressed dogs. Put on your finest and you just might win… (And there’s a best cake contest too!)
When? Saturday (but please go to Festival HQ on Friday 17th and/or Saturday 18th and ask for a Best in Show ticket. Places for each category are limited – so get in quick!)
8. You’ll get down with disco time
Every night at Eroica Britannia is crazy disco-dance-off night… Boogie the night away to all your favourite classic juniors and tweens hits. When? Friday, Saturday, Sunday at 5pm.
9. There are affordable family tickets
Mum and Dad can enjoy three days of fantastic-family-filled fun for £20 each, but for under 12’s it’s entirely free.
10. Paddington is coming.
Yes, he really is. And he says he’s very much looking forward to seeing you there…
