What a refreshing read!

The latest BritMums Book Club read Clare Balding’s autobiography My Animals and Other Family. I found it, like Balding herself, funny, witty and wrenchingly honest. And the voyeur in me was fascinated by the narrarated tour of horsey/boarding school life.

Though well known in the horsey world, Clare Balding became a household name when she was a leading BBC presenter during the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Her father was a horse trainer who rose to fame when when he trained thoroughbred champion Mill Reef in the ’70s and ’80s. This led to all kinds of fun for Clare, including riding from the time she could sit up, to being given one of the Queen’s ponies. Clare was quite sparky and a challenge to her parents.

Roughly chronological, each chapter is themed around one of her four-legged friends. It’s easy to dip in and dip out of.

I found it fascinating and have since recommended to several people to read.

I really had to try at this one. Not identifying with Clare at all and not being a massive fan of autobiographies, it was a bit of a struggle. I did find some of the anecdotes quite charming though and could sense Clare’s passion for the horses.
