Travel Round-up: Holidays in the UK

travelI’m compiling this round-up a little earlier than usual as I will be away on my own holiday in Austria when it is published. As I write, it’s the middle of July and the UK is having a mini heatwave which, after so many disappointing summers, has taken us all by surprise. To celebrate this glorious sunshine, all the chosen posts this month are based in Britain. We have some of the most beautiful locations for family holidays and, with this weather showing them at their best, you don’t need to stray far from home to have a wonderful break.

Let’s start off in Scotland where Ruth, Dorkymum, has experienced “a holiday that felt like being hugged.” Beautifully written, this post explains how a family trip back to Ruth’s childhood home provided a magical week for her four year old son: A Happy Harris Holiday.

Travelling south we stop off in Cumbria where Siân, who blogs at You’re not from round here, has been trying out Centre Parcs Winfell  with her family. Some great photos and lots of useful information here if you are considering trying out this type of holiday.

Moving east, Melissa, Talk About York, has provided a great selection of things for families to do in and around the city where she lives: How to entertain the kids this summer in York (and surrounds)

Whizzing down south now to the New Forest where Kriss, Over there to Here, has also compiled a fantastic list of activities for families: 10 Cool Things To Do With Kids In The Ancient Forest Of The New Forest

The New Forest seems to be the place to be this summer as a holiday park there has been reviewed by a number of  bloggers this month. Cathy from Mummytravels took her baby daughter and Jen from Jenography took older children. Have a read of both posts to compare experiences. There are also links to the other bloggers who reviewed the park via Jen’s post.

Five-star self catering at Shorefield Country Park, New Forest (Cathy)

Review: Self-catering in New Forest, Hampshire (Jen)

I see Jen enjoyed some cycling with her family on her trip. This was also the transport of choice for Christine who has a fairly new blog, A Family Day Out. In this post she suggests a great cycle route from Newbury to Reading which is suitable for children: Cycling the Kennet and Avon Cycle Route.

If we continue South West, we can join Callie from Callie & Chef who was in heaven enjoying the warm sunshine in the most idyllic setting:  Holiday in Dorset – or was it Provence?

Finally we reach Cornwall and the spot where Ellen, In a bun dance, has been holidaying. There are several posts from her trip, all accompanied by some great photos. I’ve chosen this one because it made me chuckle: Things we learned in Charlestown

I’ve decided not to add a linky to the round-up this month. Instead I’d like to create a bumper summer special for my next round-up at the beginning of September. Tweet me any links to your summer holiday posts: @mumsgoneto or contact me via my blog. I will try to include as many of your posts as possible.
