Welcome back to another installment of “ask geekmummy” – your chance to get answers to any of those nagging little questions you might have about blogging. This month I’ve been asked to talk about “About” pages – do you need them, and, if so, what should be on them?
So, do you need an “About” page on your blog?
Well, as with most things in blogging the answer is no, you don’t need one. Your blog is your area, your space, and you can set it out in any way you like. That said, I think an “About” page is a great addition to any blog, as it’s your chance to tell your readers a little about you. I know when I find a new blog the first thing I look for is an “About” page to find out more about the person behind the blog. In fact, when I look at my statistics my “About” page is one of my most-visited pages on my blog – month after month it’s one of my top 10 most visited pages. A good “About” page can gain you a new blog follower, or if you have a product or service on offer through your blog it would bring you a new customer.
So what should be on your About page?
Well, again, there are no rules. It’s a good idea to have a little bit about you and your family, your history or background. You could share photos of yourself and your family. You might want to include an explanation of why you started your blog, or what you hope to gain from your blog. If you publish editorial content, sponsored posts or advertisements on your blog you may want to include information about that too, or you may prefer to keep that on a separate “Disclosure” page. If you have a product or service to offer you may want to include links to that. If you are a vlogger or a podcaster it’s great to include a sample of your work too. Some people like to include contact details or a contact form, or links to social media profiles or other websites. The “About” page can be as long or a short as you like, and personally I like “About” pages that are unique, and give me an insight into the person behind the blog.
It’s a good idea to check your “About” page every couple of months to make sure it’s still accurate and relevant. Circumstances change, and the things you want to tell your readers may change as well. Have you checked your “About” page yet this year? Well, what are you waiting for?! Do it now!
If you’re seeking further inspiration, here are some of my favourite “About” pages:
I also want to give a special shout-out to Michelle who blogs over at Mummy From The Heart (you can read her “About” page here). Every year Michelle hosts “New Bloggers Fortnight” where she hosts guest posts from new bloggers on a variety of topics that other new bloggers might find useful. New Bloggers Fortnight 2013 is currently running, and if you’re a new (or not so new) blogger I recommend you check it out.
