How to fight world hunger in 30 seconds

In one part of the world, people clear out their refrigerators every week, throwing out vegetables, meat, fish and more that they didn’t eat before the sell by date.

In another part of the world, families fill their bellies with low-nutritive meals or go hungry.

On my trip with ONE to Ethiopia we met families coping with hunger first-hand. The people are beautiful, but cultivating nourishing crops and preparing them correctly is an ongoing project

The food issues affecting the world are frequently in the news but the causes and effects seem disparate, hard to grasp and even harder to solve.

The world produces enough food for everyone, yet hunger kills more than 200 children every hour.

Now a coalition of charities has banded together and is spearheading a campaign to address underlying causes of hunger, with an unprecendented social media side that we can all take part in to make a difference.

This year the UK has the presidency of the G8. We need to make enough noise so that David Cameron will be compelled to use his position to take a lead on hunger. The PM has called a “special event” on hunger the day before the G8 – this is our opportunity.

So, how much time do you have to help end hunger?

Nice one Jen, well put, it looks like this has got a load of traction which is great and I especially love the social media pack which they’ve created for this. Let’s hope everyone keeps talking and the talk turns into action.

let’s hope we can make a difference! I’ve blogged about this here: http://motheringmushroom.wordpress.com/2013/02/01/fighting-world-hunger-together-we-can-do-it-if/ and will reblog on my other blog – http://www.honestspeaks.wordpress.com too.

Thanks for sharing this story, it’s bloggers like you who showed their support and helped to spread the word about the cause. The IF Campaign achieved one of it’s major aims, which was to influence George Osborne to keep the committment of 0.7% aid from the UK’s national budget, but there is still work to be done. If you want to lend your voice to the campaign, you can still do so here: http://www.worldvision.org.uk/get-involved/campaigning/enough-food-for-everyone-if/ or with one of the other charities in the coalition.
