Google+ is one of the most powerful new social networking tools – you can build your online presence, share different things with different groups and even improve your Google ranking by using it. Over the coming weeks we’re presenting this Masterclass in conjunction with Google that can help you make the most of it.
Whether you’re a beginner or have been kicking around G+ for a while, there are great tools to explore.
Google+ Masterclass 1: Getting Started
The Benefits of G+
Since launch, Google’s competitor to Facebook and Twitter has amassed more than 170 million users, and its growth hasn’t stopped. It’s become a hotbed for early adopters, tech luminaries, marketers and businesses around the world. And it’s a great way to increase your blogging presence and online audience.
Google+ is all about sharing your passions with your social network, with the right things reaching the right people. Your recipes to your foodie lovers, your biking photos to your cycling buddies, your baby pictures to your family and friends. Here’s a rather entertaining short video which explains the benefits of Google+ and why you might need it.
Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be digging into every aspect of Google+, from Hangouts to Circles, from Google+ Pages to the benefits of Google+ specifically for professional bloggers. We’ll be building an extensive step-by-step guide of the new social platform changing the online arena. We know there have been some worries previously about Google privacy, but Google+ is addressing privacy and security directly.
You can choose the level of privacy yourself through the various settings available. For example you can choose whether you reveal your email address on your profile or not. Here’s a video about how to manage your privacy settings. We also like this step-by-step video guide by Flyte Media.

As with all new social networks, there is a language of Google+. Have a look at this great terminology table from Guy Kawasaki that helps explain the language of G+. Guy is a guru on all things google+ so you might also want to add him to your circles (+GuyKawasaki).
Making a charming profile
A good profile is crucial because people look at profiles and make a flat decision about whether you’re worth circling and paying attention to, so take some time to fill in the different elements. There are five sections in a profile: name, tagline, avatar (picture), scrapbook (the five photos along the top), and background information. Keep your name straightforward, be careful with nicknames as it could make you harder to find in the google+ search. Write a good tagline for yourself, this is your opportunity to sell yourself, but keep it short and sweet. A good avatar or profile picture goes a long way, here is an album by Kris Krug which shows some good examples of great avatars. Finally your scrapbook (the 5 images across the top of your profile) is great for displaying the things that are important to you.
